1. The parents can tell them the stories that have been narrated of the children of the Sahaabah at the time of the Prophet (s), how they fought those who tried to harm him, how quickly they responded to his call and obeyed his commands, and how they loved that which he loved, and how they memorized the hadeeth of the Prophet (s).

2. The parents should help her to memorize as much hadeeth as she can of ahaadeeth, and reward her for that… One of the things that was narrated concerning that was the words of al-Zubayri: Maalik ibn Anas had a daughter who memorized his knowledge – i.e. al-Muwatta’. She used to stand behind the door and if a student made a mistake she would knock on the door, and Maalik would be alerted and would correct him. And it was narrated that al-Nadar ibn al-Haarith said: “I heard Ibraaheem ibn Adham say: ‘My father said to me, O my son, seek hadeeth, and every time you hear a hadeeth and memorize it, I will give you a dirham, so I learnt hadeeth in that way.”

3. They should teach her – according to her level of understanding – about the life of the Prophet (s) and his military campaigns, and the lives of the Sahaabah, both men and women – may Allaah be pleased with them, so that she will grow up loving these noble people, and be influenced by their behaviour, and will be keen to strive and sincere in correcting herself and supporting her religion.

4. The Sahaabah and the salaf (early generations) were keen to teach their children about the life of the Prophet (s), and they would teach it alongside teaching the Qur’aan, because his seerah is the interpretation of the the meanings of the Qur’aan, as well as stirring up emotions and demonstrating true Islam and having a wondrous effect on the soul. It also carries the meanings of love and jihad to save mankind from misguidance and bring them to guidance, from falsehood to truth, from the darkness of jaahiliyyah to the light of Islam.

5. When telling their daughter about the life of the Prophet (s) and the lives of the male and female Sahaabah (ra), the father and mother must tell her about things that she can relate to, such as the childhood of the Prophet (s), some stories about his life with (his wet-nurse) Haleemah al-Sa’diyyah, and how Allaah bestowed goodness and blessings upon Haleemah and her family because of him (s), the night of the Hijrah and how Allaah covered the eyes of the mushrikeen, and other stories which demonstrate how Allaah helped him. Thus the girl’s heart will be filled with love for Allaah and love for His Messenger (s). It was narrated from ‘Ali (ra) that the Prophet (s) said:

“Train your children to acquire three characteristics: love of your Prophet, love of his family and reading the Qur’aan, for the bearers of the Qur’aan will be in the shade of Allaah on the Day when there will be no shade except His, with His Prophets and His chosen ones.” (Narrated by al-Suyooti in al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, p. 25; classed as da’eef by al-Albaani in Da’eef al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, p. 36, no. 251).

It would be a good idea if the parents devote a suitable time for teaching the life of the Prophet (s) during the daily family lesson, when the children can read about seerah in simplified books, or the father or mother can tell them these stories in a manner that is appropriate to the child’s age.

1 – Seek refuge with Allah from the Devil:

Sulayman bin Sard narrated:

“I was sitting with the Prophet, when two men began slandering one another. One of them was red in the face, and the veins on his neck were standing out. The Prophet (s) said: “I know a word which, if he were to say it, what he feels would go away. If he said: “I seek refuge with Allah from the Devil,” what he feels would go away.’”

['Fath al-Bari'; 6/337]

The Messenger of Allah (s) said:

“If a man gets angry and says: “I seek refuge with Allah,” his anger will go away.”

['Sahih al-Jami'; # 695]

2 – Remain silent:

The Messenger of Allah (s) said:

“If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent.”

['Sahih al-Jami'; # 693]

3 – Sit down or lie down:

“Abu Dharr was taking his camels to drink at a trough that he owned, when some other people came along and said to one another: “Who can compete with Abu Dharr in bringing animals to drink and make his hair stand on end?” A man said: “I can.” So, he brought his animals and competed with Abu Dharr and ended up breaking the trough.Abu Dharr was standing when he saw this, so, he sat down, then he laid down. Someone asked him: “O Abu Dharr, why did you sit down then lie down?” He said: “The Messenger of Allah (s) said: “If any of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so that his anger will go away. If iit does not go away, let him lie down.”“”

[Reported in the 'Musnad' of Ahmad (5/152) and 'Sahih al-Jami' (694)]

al-Imam al-Khattabi said: “One who is standing is in a position to strike and destroy, while the one who is sitting is less likely to do that, and the one who is lying down can do neither. It is possible that the Prophet told the angry person to sit down or lie down so that he would not do something that he would later regret, and Allah Knows best.”

4 – Smile:

Anas bin Malik narrated:

“I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (s), and he was wearing a Najrani cloak with a rough collar. A bedouin came and seized him roughly by the edge of his cloak, and I saw the marks left on his neck by the collar. Then the bedouin ordered him to give him some of the wealth of Allah that he had. The Prophet turned to him and smiled, then ordered that he should be given something.”

['Fath al-Bari'; 10/375]

5 – Remember the advice of the Prophet:

Abu Hurayrah narrated:

“A man said to the Prophet: “Advise me.” He said: “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet said to him: “Do not become angry.”“

['Fath al-Bari'; 10/456]

According to another narration, the man later said: “I thought about what the Prophet said, and I realized that anger combines all kinds of evil.”

6 – Remember the high status of those who control themselves:

The Messenger of Allah said:

“The strong man is not the one who can overpower others. Rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.”

[Reported in the 'Musnad' of Ahmad; 2/236, and it is authentic]

The Messenger of Allah also said:

“The strongest man is the one who, when he gets angry and his face reddens and his hackles rise, is able to defeat his anger.”

['Sahih al-Jami'; # 3859]

Anas bin Malik narrated

“The Messenger of Allah passed by some people who were wrestling. He asked: “What is this?” They said: “So-and-so is the strongest; he can beat anybody.” The Messenger of Allah then said: “Shall I not tell you who is even stronger then him? The man who, when he is mistreated by another, controls his anger, has defeated his own devil and the devil of the one who made him angry.”“

7 – Rewards for those who control their anger:

The Messenger of Allah said:

“Do not become angry, and Paradise is yours.”

['Sahih al-Jami'; # 7374]

The Messenger of Allah said:

“Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allah will call him before all of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, and will let him choose of the Hur al-’Ayn whoever he wants.”

[Reported by Abu Dawud (4777), and it is in 'Sahih al-Jami' (6518)]

8 – Remember that resisting anger is one of the signs of righteousness:

{“And march forth in the way to forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous; those who spend in prosperity and in adversity, repress anger, and pardon men. Verily, Allah loves the good-doers.”} [Al 'Imran; 134]

9 – Submit to reminders:

Ibn ‘Abbas narrated:

“A man sought permission to speak to ‘Umar bin al-Khattab, then he said: “O Ibn al-Khattab, you are not giving us much and you are not judging fairly between us.” ‘Umar was so angry that he was about to attack the man, but al-Hurr bin Qays – who was one of those present – said: “O Commander of the Believers! Allah said to His Prophet: {“Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish.”} [al-A'raf; 199], and this man is one of the foolish.” By Allah, ‘Umar could go no further after al-Hurr had recited this verse to him, as he a man who was careful to adhere to the Book of Allah.”

…as opposed to how one of the hypocrites reacted when one of the Companions said to him: “Seek refuge with Allah from the Devil,” So, he replied: “Do you think I am crazy? Go away!”

['Fath al-Bari'; 1/465]

10 – Remember the bad effects of anger:

‘Alqamah bin Wa’il narrated:

“My father said to me: “I was sitting with the Prophet, when a man came to him leading another man by a rope. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, this man killed my brother.” The Messenger of Allah asked him, “Did you kill him?” He said: “Yes, I killed him.” He asked: “How did you kill him?” He said: “He and I were hitting a tree to make the leaves fall for animal feed, and then he insulted me, so I struck him on the side of the head with an axe and killed him.”"

['Sahih Muslim'; # 1307]

Enkelen van de vrome voorgangers zeiden: “De toegewijde persoon is degene die zijn goede daden verhult, zoals hij zijn slechte daden verhult.”

Sahl ibnoe ^cAbdullah zei: “Niets is zo zwaar voor een persoon als het hebben van toewijding, omdat dit hem vreemd is.”

Yoesoef ibnoel Hoessayn zei: “Het meest waardevolle in dit wereldse leven is toewijding.

Hoe vaak span ik mij niet in om mijn hart te zuiveren van gepronk, of het lijkt alsof dit wederom in een andere gedaante opdoemt.”

Ar-Rabie^c ibnoe Khoetaym zei: “Alles waarmee niet het Aangezicht van Allah wordt nagestreefd, zal tenietgaan.”

Aboe Soelaymaan zei: “Als de dienaar toewijding betracht, dan zal hij afgeholpen worden van influisteringen en gepronk.”

Noe^caym ibnoe Hammaad zei: “Dat wij zweepslagen moeten verduren gaat ons gemakkelijker af, dan het betrachten van volledige toewijding.”

Yahyaa ibn Abi Kathier zei: “Leert jullie zelf zuivere toewijding aan, want dit is belangrijker dan daden.”

Yoesoef ibn Asbaat zei: “Het zuiveren van de intentie wordt door de asceten zwaarder gevonden, dan het zich langdurig inspannen op de Weg van Allah middels daden.”

Makhoel zei: “Geen dienaar zal veertig dagen zijn toewijding zuiver weten te houden, of de bronnen van wijsheid zullen vanuit zijn hart en tong ontspringen.”

Ibnoel Qayyim zei: “Een daad zonder toewijding en leidraad is als een reiziger die zijn bagage vult met zand waar hij niets aan heeft.”

Voorbeelden van toewijding van de vrome voorgangers

Nooit werd ar-Rabie^c betrapt terwijl hij vrijwillige gebeden verrichtte in de moskee, behalve één keer.

Als Mansoer ibnoel Moe^ctamir het ochtendgebed had verricht, dan toonde hij zich tegenover zijn metgezellen energiek en actief,

terwijl hij wellicht de hele nacht staand in het gebed had doorgebracht. Dit zou hij doen om zijn daden te verhullen.

^cAbdurrahmaan ibn Abi Laylaa pleegde altijd het nachtgebed te verrichten, maar wanneer iemand dan binnenkwam, deed hij alsof hij sliep.

De vrouw van Hassaan ibn Abi Sinaan vertelde over haar man: “Hij pleegde bij mij in bed te kruipen,

waarna hij mij zou beduvelen zoals een vrouw haar kind soms beduveld. Wanneer hij wist dat ik in slaap was gevallen, stond hij op om het gebed te verrichten.”

Aboe Hamzah ath-Thamaali zei: “^cAli ibnoe Hoesayn droeg ’s nachts altijd een zak brood op zijn rug, die hij als liefdadigheid zou uitgeven.

Hij pleegde te zeggen: ,,Heimelijke liefdadigheid, dooft de Woede van de Heer.”

Moehammad ibnoe Ishaaq zei: “Er waren mensen in Medina die van proviand voorzien werden, terwijl zij niet eens wisten waar dit vandaan kwam.

Toen ^cAli ibnoel Hoesayn stierf, moesten zij het zonder datgene stellen wat zij altijd ‘s nacht kregen.”

Ibnoe Djawzi zei: “Wanneer Ibraahiem an-Nakha^cy de Koran aan het reciteren was en iemand bij hem binnenliep, zou hij deze bedekken.”

Moehammad ibnoe Waasi^c zei: “Ik ken mannen die twintig jaar huilden, terwijl hun vrouwen hier niets van wisten.”

Ash-Shaafi^cy zei: “Ik wenste dat de mensen deze kennis die ik bezit van mij overnamen, zonder dat zij deze aan mij toeschrijven.”

Abu Huraira verhaalt:

De Heilige Profeet (s) zei ook over de Vrijdag:

Betreffende de Vrijdag, is overgeleverd:

Er is aardig wat verschil van mening onder de geleerden betreffende wat precies dat prachtige uur op vrijdag is wanneer de voorziening dan wel verhoring verzekerd wordt. De beste weg is echter dat dit uur als verborgen behandelt zou moeten worden, en de gehele dag zou met smeekgebeden en verheerlijking van Allah doorgebracht moeten worden. Het was de gewoonte van de Heilige Profeet (s) om een speciale betekenis en eer aan Vrijdag te geven.

Voorbeelden van deze handelswijze zijn talrijk, maar, het volgende kan geciteerd worden: Op die dag, droeg hij op om Soerah as-Sajdah (in fajr) [en al-Insaan] te reciteren, omdat het alle zaken bevat die relevant zijn voor Vrijdag: het nemen van een bad, het gebruiken van parfum en miswak, vroeg naar het gezamenlijke Vrijdagsgebed gaan, luisteren naar de preek, zijn beste kleding dragen en Allah voortdurend gedenken.

Toen de Heilige Profeet (s) op de preekstoel stond en de Vrijdags toespraak (preek) gaf, zouden zijn ogen rood worden en zijn stem zou scherp en luider worden met grote boosheid. Maar, desondanks was hij gewoon de toespraak kort te houden maar hij verlengde het gebed dat erop volgde.

Mukhtasar Zaad ul Ma`aad
Imam Ibn ul Qayyim al Jawziyyah

Oem Soelaim was getrouwd met Malik ibn Nadar en schonk hem een zoon, Anas ibn Malik. Zij was een van de eerste Ansari-vrouwen die moslima werd.

Toen zij moslima werd, was haar echtgenoot Malik kwaad op haar en verliet haar, maar zij bleef moslima. Kort daarna hoorde zij het nieuws van zijn dood en zij was nog in de bloei van haar jeugd. Zij droeg dit alles voor Allaah, met de hoop op beloning en wijdde zich aan de zorg voor haar tien jaar oude zoon Anas ibn Malik. Zij bracht hem bij de Profeet (s) zodat hij de Profeet (s) kon dienen (en van hem leren).

Eén van de beste, knapste, rijkste en sterkste jongemannen van Madinah kwam om haar hand vragen voordat hij moslim werd. Dit was Aboe Talhah . Veel van de jonge vrouwen van Madinah vonden hem aantrekkelijk vanwege zijn welvaart, kracht en jeugdige en knappe uiterlijk. Hij dacht dat Oem Soelaim zich meteen opgetogen zou haasten om zijn aanbod te accepteren. Maar tot zijn verbazing zei zij tegen hem: “O Aboe Talhah, weet jij niet dat de god die jij aanbidt slechts een boom is die in de grond groeide en door de slaaf van Banoe die en die in vorm is gesneden.” Hij zei: “Natuurlijk.” Zij zei: “Schaam jij je dan niet om jezelf neer te gooien voor een stuk hout dat uit de grond gegroeid is en door de slaaf van Banoe die en die vorm heeft gekregen?”

Aboe Talhah wees haar op het feit van een hoge bruidschat en een luxe levenswijze, maar zij hield vast aan haar opvatting en zei hem vrijuit: “O Aboe Talhah, een man zoals jij wordt niet afgewezen, maar je bent een ongelovige man en ik een moslimvrouw. Het is voor mij niet toegestaan om met jou te trouwen, maar als je moslim wordt, dan zou dat mijn bruidschat zijn en ik zal je om niets anders meer vragen.”

Hij kwam de volgende dag terug om haar middels een grotere bruidschat en een groter cadeau over te halen, maar zij hield vol. Deze vasthoudendheid en volwassenheid vergrootten haar schoonheid in zijn ogen. Zij zei tegen hem: “O Aboe Talhah, weet jij dan niet dat je god die je aanbidt, door een slaaf van timmerman die en die uitgesneden is? Als je hem zou aansteken zou hij verbranden.” Haar woorden kwamen voor Aboe Talhah als een shock en hij vroeg zichzelf af: “Brandt de Heer?” Toen sprak hij de woorden “Asj-hadoe an laa ilaaha illa Allaah wa asj-hadoe anna Mohammadan rasoelo Allaah” uit.*

Toen zei Oem Soelaim met volle vreugde tegen haar zoon Anas ibn Malik: “O Anas, regel mijn huwelijk met Aboe Talhah.” Dus bracht Anas getuigen en het huwelijk werd voltrokken.

Aboe Talhah was zo gelukkig dat hij bereid was om al zijn rijkdom aan Oem Soelaim ter beschikking te stellen, maar zij had de houding van een onbaatzuchtige, trotse, oprechte gelovige vrouw. Zij zei tegen hem: “O Aboe Talhah, Ik ben met je getrouwd omwille Allaah en ik neem geen andere bruidschat.” Zij wist dat als Aboe Talhah moslim zou worden, zij geen echtgenoot kon krijgen die net zo waardevol was als hij.** Maar zij besefte zich ook wat de beloning is die zij van Allaah verdiende die beter zou zijn dan het bezitten van rode kamelen (de beste soort kamelen) in deze wereld, want ze had de Profeet (s) horen zeggen:

De Profeet (s) heeft gezegd

“Als Allaah iemand door jou naar islam leidt, dan is dat beter voor jou dan het bezitten van rode kamelen.” Fathoel-Bari, 7/476.

 

Zulke grote krachtige moslimvrouwen zijn voorbeelden die het waard zijn om mee te wedijveren. Moslimvrouwen kunnen hiervan een zuivere religie, een krachtig karakter, gedegen geloof en wijsheid leren.

Wa lhamdoe lillah rabbi l’alameen.

* Dit betekent: Ik getuig dat er geen god is die waarlijk aanbeden mag worden behalve Alllah en ik getuig tevens dat Mohammad de Boodschapper van Allaah is. Met dit getuigenis treedt een ongelovige de islam binnen. Subhana Allaah we hebben gezien dat mensen huilen als ze dit getuigenis uitspreken. Het is alsof ze dood waren en met dit getuigenis tot leven zijn gewekt. Ineens weten ze dat dit de reden is waarom Allaah hun heeft geschapen. Namelijk om Allaah alleen te aanbidden zonder partners.
** Zoals de Profeet laat zien in een hadith dat als een persoon goed is voordat die moslim werd, die goedheid door de islam alleen maar wordt vervolmaakt.

De dag en de nacht zijn schatkamers. Wees erg oplettend wat je erin opslaat. Handel ’s nachts op passende wijze en handel overdag op passende wijze.

Grote en kleine zonden achterwegen laten, dat is Taqwa.
Wees als degene, die op doornen loopt, vrezend wat hij ziet.
Onderschat het kleine niet, want bergen zijn gemaakt van kleine steentjes. 

Wie het Paradijs wil zal zich haasten naar goede daden;
wie de Hel vreest zal verleidingen weerstaan;
wie zeker is van de dood zal ophouden met het zoeken van pleziertjes
en wie de wereld herkent (lees: op de juiste waarde weet te schatten) zal moeilijkheden met gemak dragen.

Wie zijn graf zonder voorzieningen binnengaat is als degene, die de zee opgaat zonder schip.

Wat we nu doen echoot door tot in de eeuwigheid. 

Als iemand voor iedere zonde, die hij gemaakt had, een kiezelsteentje in zijn huis zou gooien, dan zou zijn huis binnen de kortste keren vol zijn.

Kijk niet naar hoe klein de zonde is, kijk liever naar Degene tegen Wie je hebt gezondigd. 

Van alle dingen in de wereld die je kunt krijgen is de Islam het beste, van alle dagelijkse bezigheden die jouw tijd vergen is Ibadat (Allah gehoorzamen) het beste en van alle lessen die je kunt leren is de dood het beste.

De rechtschapen salaf waren vol angst dat hun goede daden verspilling waren, of niet zouden worden geaccepteerd, wat de huidige generatie betreft, die is er zeker van dat hun verwaarlozing vergeven zal worden…  

Degene die eeuwigdurende vrede en geluk wenst zónder problemen, begrijpt niets van Allah’s bevelen en heeft ook geen idee wat onderwerping aan Allah betekent.
Elk ziel -gelovig of ongelovig- zal onvermijdelijk in deze wereld ervaren wat het is om te lijden,
want dit leven is gebaseerd op moeilijkheden.

Ik sta verstomd van het oog dat slaapt, terwijl het weet van de lange rust in het donker van het graf. 

De mensen die in het Hiernamaals het gelukkigste zullen zijn, zullen degene zijn, die zich in deze wereld het meest bezorgd tonen (om het Hiernamaals).
Degenen die het hardst zullen lachen, zijn degenen die in deze wereld het meest gehuild hebben (uit angst). De oprechtste mensen in Iman zijn degenen die in deze wereld het meeste nadenken.

‘Ik wens voor jullie, o mijn broeders, drie zaken: Dat jullie deze Qoraan reciteren tijdens de nacht en dag, dat jullie je niet afscheiden van de islamitische gemeenschap en dat jullie wegblijven bij de eer van de moslims.’

Goed zijn tegenover de ouders
 
Hafsah bint Sierien heeft gezegd:

‘Als Mohammad* bij zijn moeder op bezoek was, dan sprak hij haar niet aan terwijl hij daarvoor zijn hele tong gebruikte, uit schaamte voor haar.’ En ibn ‘Awn heeft over Mohammad gezegd: ‘Als hij bij zijn moeder was, dan praatte hij heel zacht en rustig.’

al-Hassan al-Basrie werd gevraagd:

‘Ik ben al op Hadj geweest, maar mijn moeder heeft mij nogmaals toestemming gegeven om de Hadj te verrichten.’ al-Hassan zei hierop: ‘Eén keer met haar aan de eettafel zitten is mij geliefder dan jouw Hadj.’
 
‘Orwah ibn az-Zobayr heeft gezegd:

‘Degene die met een scherpe blik naar zijn ouders kijkt is niet goed tegen hen geweest.’
 
‘Amr ibn ‘Obayr was gewend samen met zijn vrienden bij Kahmas op bezoek te gaan. Op een dag zei de moeder van Kahmas tegen hem:

‘Ik zie deze man en zijn vrienden en ik heb een hekel aan hen, zij geven mij geen goed gevoel, zit dus niet met hen.’ De volgende keer dat ‘Amr en zijn vrienden op bezoek kwamen, keek Kahmas uit het raam en zei: ‘Mijn moeder heeft een hekel aan jou en je vrienden, kom dus niet meer naar mij toe.’
 

It is reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – that he said:
The life of this world is made up of three days: yesterday has gone with all that was done; tomorrow, you may never reach; but today is for you so do what you should do today.

A Fly or a Mountain

‘Abdullah b. Mas’ûd – Allah be pleased with him – said: The believer sees his sins as if he is sitting at the foot of a mountain fearing that it might fall on him, while the sinner (fâjir) sees his sins as a fly that lands on his nose, he just waves it away.

I sit with the Salaf

It is reported from Nu’aym b. Hammâd:
‘Abdullah b. Al-Mubârak used to often stay at home, so he was asked, “Don’t you get lonely?” He replied, “How could I get lonely when I am with the Prophet (s) (i.e. I read his hadîth)?”

It was once said to ‘Abdullah b. Al-Mubârak, “O Abû ‘Abd Al-Rahmân, you often sit alone at home.” He said, “I am alone? I am with the Prophet – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his Companions.” Meaning: reading hadîth.

Shaqîq b. Ibrâhîm reports:
It was once said to ‘Abdullah b. Al-Mubârak, “After you have prayed with us you don’t sit with us?” He replied, “I go and sit with the Sahâbah and the Tâbi’în.” We said, “And how can you sit with the Sahâbah and Tâbi’în (when they have all passed away)?” He replied, “I go and read the knowledge I have collected, I find their narrations and deeds. What would I do with you? You sit around backbiting people.”

The Faces of Nifâq

It is reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – that he said:
It used to be said: it is part of al-nifâq (hypocrisy) to be inwardly different from what you are on the outside, to say one thing and do another and to be different in how you enter and how you leave. And the root of al-nifâq is lying.

A Realistic Faith

Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allah have mercy on him – said:
Faith (îmân) is not by embellishment or wishful thinking, but it is what settles in the heart and is verified through your works. Whoever says good but does not do good will have his words compared to his deeds by Allah. Whoever says good and does good will have his words raised by his deeds. This is because Allah ‘azza wa jalla said:
To Him ascends the good word, and the righteous deed raises it. [Sûrah Al-Fâtir: 10]

Muhammad b. Wâsi’ said: I have lived amongst men who were such that one of them would lie with his wife on the same pillow and his side of the pillow would be soaked with his tears under his cheek without his wife even noticing.

When Allah commands us to give up sins and to avoid them it is not because our sins will harm Him. It is only us who will benefit by avoiding sins. Likewise, we alone will be affected by the sins we commit. It was the habit of the righteous ancestors to think about their sins whenever they were faced with hardship in anything. In fact, sins have many bad effects on the lives of the sinners.

How can sins change our lives?

What are the effects of sins on our well-being?

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyah explains to us these effects in his well-known book Al-Jawab Al-Kafi:

·                 Prevention of knowledge: Knowledge is a light which Allah throws into the heart and disobedience extinguishes this light.

Imam Ash-Shafi`i said: “I complained to Wakee` about the weakness of my memory, so he ordered me to abandon disobedience and informed me that knowledge is light. He said that the light of Allah is not given to the disobedient.”

·                 Prevention of sustenance: Just as righteousness brings about sustenance, the abandonment of righteousness causes poverty. There is nothing which can bring about sustenance like the abandonment of sins.

·                 Prevention of obedience (to Allah): If there was no other punishment for sin except that it prevents one from obeying Allah then this would be sufficient.

·                 Disobedience weakens the heart and the body: The fact that it weakens the heart is clear. Disobedience continues to weaken the heart until its life ceases completely.

·                 Disobedience reduces one’s lifespan and destroys any blessings: Just as righteousness increases one’s lifespan, sinning reduces it.

·                 Legacy of the cursed: Every type of disobedience is the legacy of a nation from among those which Allah destroyed. Sodomy is a legacy of the people of Lot, taking more than one’s due right and giving what is less is a legacy of the people of Shu`aib, spreading mischief and corruption is a legacy of the people of Pharaoh and pride, including arrogance and tyranny, is a legacy of the people of Hud. So the disobedient one is somehow a part of those nations who were the enemies of Allah.

·                 Disobedience is a cause of the servant being held in contempt by his Lord: Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: “They became contemptible in (His sight) so they disobeyed Him. If they were honorable (in His sight) He would have protected them.”

·                 Effect of sins on others: The ill-effects of the sinner fall upon those around him as well as the animals as a result of which they are touched by harm.

·                 Living in sin: The servant continues to commit sins until they become very easy for him and seem insignificant in his heart and this is a sure sign of destruction. Every time a sin becomes insignificant in the sight of the servant it becomes great in the sight of Allah.

·                 Disobedience brings humiliation and lowliness: Every aspect of honor lies in the obedience of Allah. Ibn Al-Mubarak said: “I have seen sins kill the hearts. And humiliation is inherited by their continuity. The abandonment of sins gives life to the hearts. And the prevention of your soul is better for it.”

·                 Disobedience corrupts the intellect: The intellect has light and disobedience extinguishes this light. When the light of the intellect is extinguished it becomes weak and deficient.

·                 Sealing of the heart: When disobedience increases, the servant’s heart becomes sealed so that he becomes of those who are heedless. The Exalted said: [But no! A stain has been left on their hearts on account of what they used to earn (that is, their actions)] (Al-Mutaffifin 83: 14).

·                 Sins cause various types of corruption to occur in the land: Corruption of the water, the air, the plants, the fruit, and the dwelling places. The Exalted said: [Mischief has appeared on the land and the sea on account of what the hands of men have earned; that He may give them a taste of some of (the actions) they have done, in order that they may return] (Ar-Rum 30: 41).

·                 Disappearance of modesty: Modesty is the essence of the life of the heart and is the basis of every good. Its disappearance is the disappearance of all that is good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Modesty is goodness, all of it.”

·                 Sins weaken and reduce the magnification of Allah the Almighty in the heart of the servants.

·                 Sins are the cause of Allah forgetting His servant: Sinning also causes Allah to abandon him and leave him to fend for himself with his soul and his Satan and in this is destruction from which no deliverance can be hoped for.

·                 Being removed from the realm of benevolence: When a persons sins, benevolence is removed from his heart. When benevolence fills the heart it prevents it from disobedience.

·                 Disobedience causes the favors (of Allah) to cease and makes His revenge lawful: No blessing ceases to reach a servant except because of a sin, and no retribution is made lawful upon him except because of a sin. Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “No trial has descended except due to a sin and it (the trial) is not repelled except by repentance.”
